A Day in November Can Begin to Reverse 'Seven Days in May' - The Good Men Project

President Jordan Lyman in the 1964 film “Seven Days in May,” when urged to face “the enemy” (the treasonous high military command attempting to launch a coup d’etat), Lyman explained what that enemy is:

… [General] Scott, the Joint Chiefs, even the very emotional, very illogical lunatic fringe: they’re NOT the enemy. The enemy’s an age – a nuclear age. It happens to have killed man’s faith in his ability to influence what happens to him. And out of this comes a sickness, and out of sickness a frustration, a feeling of impotence, helplessness, weakness. And from this, this desperation, we look for a champion in red, white, and blue. Every now and then a man on a white horse rides by, and we appoint him to be our personal god for the duration. For some men it was a Senator McCarthy, for others it was a General Walker, and now it’s a General Scott.

The United States has suffered from a coup d’etat of sorts, though not directed by rogue military leaders bent on grabbing power. Riding not on a white horse but, rather, down a golden escalator, this hoped-for champion decked in red, white, and blue was elected by a minority of the public as their personal god.

This populist, this self-described defender, and advocate of the cheated, the disposed, the resentful, those left behind by the newest enemy of an age – a globalism age – rode also a wave coming “out of sickness, and out of sickness a frustration, a feeling of impotence, helplessness, weakness.”

Like all false gods, though, the façade of splendor and majesty soon rotted away exposing an underbelly of self-serving opportunism and interest only in autocratic powers and massive riches.

The Trump regime misrepresented its announced campaign and ruling mantra of “Make America Great Again,” with its covert political philosophy of “Make Corporations Richer and Unburdened by Government Regulations” resulting in “Let the People Be Damned.”

Let the people be damned and diseased in their health care options. Let the people be damned and mucked in the trickle-down tax code. Let the people be damned and divided by false enemies of Trump’s creation. Let the people be damned and sickened by environmental climate change.

As our planet is experiencing ever-increasing temperatures resulting in higher intensity and more frequent storms and droughts, and even as weather forecasters are predicting a massive and powerful hurricane with potentially deadly and property-damaging winds with up to three feet of rain, the Trump regime announced yet another reversal of environmental standards for the benefit of the corporate sector over concerns for public health and safety.

This latest assault on federal regulations originally intended to fight climate change regards finding and stopping methane leaks from escaping oil and gas wells, which were imposed during the Obama administration. Earlier this year, Trump’s Environmental “Protection” Agency relaxed carbon dioxide emission limits from power plants and vehicles, and it also proposed allowing states to determine their own emissions guidelines for coal-based power plants.

According to E.P.A.’s own research, however, methane has been determined to warm the atmosphere 84 times more than carbon dioxide. In addition, Trump’s proposal for coal-fueled power plants will seriously increase pollution-related illnesses such as asthma and emphysema resulting in premature deaths.

These proposals along with the Trump regime’s long list of environmental-destroying policies imperils the entire planet.

As in “Seven Days in May” in which the nuclear age “happens to have killed man’s faith in his ability to influence what happens to him,” likewise in many sectors of our society, our global age has resulted in resentment and cynicism in the political process. “It happens to have killed [people]’s faith in [their] ability to influence what happens to [them].”

It has challenged many people’s willingness to vote, to perceive any differences in the political parties, or to believe they can effect change. But as the old political truism declares that “elections have consequences,” we have witnessed the consequences of the 2016 elections.

This year collectively we have a chance to begin reversing a coup d’etat.
